“You’re going to make a rut in the floor if you don’t stop pacing,” Landon observed from the kitchen.

“I can’t help it. Nova should’ve been back by now... or at least called.”

“She might have got tied up with an emergency. She doesn’t exactly have office hours.”

“You’re right, or at least that’s what I keep telling myself, but I can’t stop feeling like something’s wrong.” He stopped and stared at his brother. “You don’t feel it?”

Landon placed the lid on the pot and turned to face him.

“Yeah, I feel it, but you’ve got enough anxiety going for both of us.”

“I don’t know what to do, and I hate feeling this helpless,” Sawyer snapped. “I’ve called a half-dozen times, and they all go straight to voice mail.”

Landon glanced at the clock on the kitchen wall. It was nearing six in the evening and was already dark outside.

“We could drive down to the clinic and see if she’s there,” Landon suggested.

“Yeah, I suppose, though part of me hates to leave.”

“There’s only one way up here, we’d see her if she was headed this way.”

“True, and I remember the alarm sequence and keypad code so we can get in if she’s not there. She might have left an address lying around.”

“It’s better than sitting here and watching you pace. Let’s go.” Landon turned off the stove and headed for the coat rack.

Within minutes, they headed down the road toward town. Luckily, it hadn’t snowed yet, but that didn’t mean it wouldn’t. Sawyer gripped the steering wheel and focused on the narrow road. The last thing he needed was to run off the path and either hit something or get stuck—either scenario would be a disaster.

“Should we call Nova’s dad?” Landon’s voice was low, but Sawyer sensed the worry creeping through.

“Let’s wait till we get to the clinic. I don’t want to alarm the Alpha unnecessarily.” He glanced at his brother. “This is not quite how I wanted our relationship to start off.”

“You have a point.” Landon met his gaze. “Who wants to tell the Alpha we lost his daughter the first day she went back to work?”

“Technically, we didn’t lose her.”

“It’s not gonna make a damn bit of difference to Nova’s father.”

“You got that right,” Sawyer groaned.

The rest of the ride was made in silence, each lost in their thoughts but both thinking of their mate.

Sawyer pulled into the small parking lot on the side of the clinic and slammed both hands against the steering wheel.

“She’s not here, and going by the snow on the lot, no one has been here in a while.”

“Let’s go inside and see if we can find out anything,” Landon suggested.

“I hope there’s some kind of clue in there.” Sawyer yanked on his cap as he exited the truck. “Because if there’s not, I have no idea how to find her.”

Sawyer opened the back door to the clinic to find the lights off. Feeling around, he located a switch and flipped it, bathing the room in soft light. Landon walked past him and looked around.
